Claims Against GFL Environmental
Residents living near the GFL landfill in Upper Stoney Creek have commenced legal proceedings against GFL Environmental Inc. relating to persistent odours allegedly emanating from the landfill facility located at 65 Green Mountain Road West.
The claims allege that the odours have substantially interfered with residents’ use and enjoyment of their homes and properties and have negatively impacted their quality of life.
The lawsuits seek compensation for damages allegedly caused by the ongoing odour issues.
Allegations
The claims allege that since approximately 2023, nearby residents have experienced frequent and offensive odours originating from the landfill facility.
Residents allege that the odours have:
- Prevented them from comfortably enjoying their homes and outdoor spaces;
- Forced them to keep windows and doors closed;
- Caused discomfort and frustration; and
- Impacted surrounding property values and neighbourhood enjoyment.
The lawsuits further allege that the odours have persisted despite numerous complaints and regulatory involvement.

Opioids claimed 34,455 deaths between January 2016 and September 2022.
Opioid deaths since COVID
According to the Canadian government’s Health Infobase, between January 2019 and September 2021, Canada experienced an average of 20 deaths per day related to opioid toxicity, with a peak of 21 deaths per day in 2021.
Prescriptions
In 2017, enough oral solid opioids were prescribed to provide every Canadian with the equivalent of over 1 mg of morphine per day.
Drug overdose deaths
Drug overdoses accounted for approximately 17% of all deaths among Canadians aged 30 to 39 in 2019, and 13% of deaths among those aged 40 to 49.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
There were more than 28,000 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responses to suspected opioid-related overdoses in 2022 (January – September).
